Spanning the years from 1880 to 1927, this lyrical masterpiece concerns the lives, loves and heartbreaks of three generations of show folk on the Mississippi, in Chicago and on Broadway (and their life-long friends). The primary plot follows Magnolia, the naive daughter of the show boat captain, as she marries a gambler and moves with him to Chicago. His gambling continues as his debts compound, and soon he deserts her and their young daughter. A subplot concerns the potential arrest of Magnolia’s selfless best friend on charges of miscegenation when it’s discovered that she is mulatto, and her subsequent downward spiral into despair. The passing of time reunites Magnolia and her now-grown daughter with her family on the show boat as well as with her husband, who eventually returns offering a hopeful second chance for a real family. A musical masterpiece featuring "Can't Help Lovin' That Man," "Make Believe" and "Ol' Man River." The musical that started it all in 1927 -- don't miss it!

August 2006 Events

Tuesday August 1 Town Hall Meeting w/Councilman Loveless

Columbia City Councilman Jim Loveless has been hosting a town hall meeting in the CAT3 studios. So far his guests have included the city manager and council representative Laura Nauser. It's a low-key affair and a great opportunity to pose questions to at least one member of the council one-on-one.

The next town hall session is scheduled for Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. in the CAT3 studios which are in the basement of the Helis Communication Center at Stephens College (the same building that Windsor Auditorium is in). The taping usually takes about an hour and it's a good idea to arrive 5 or 10 minutes before the taping starts. --item from Jo Sapp

Tuesday May 15 Immigration Study Meeting, Columbia Public Library 7:00 p.m.

This is the kickoff meeting for our local work related to our local study on immigration. It will take place in Conference Room B at Columbia Public Library.

This study was initiated by LWV-US, and our job locally is to look at the impact of immigration on our local area, and the issues, facts and fictions on immigration in the US today. We anticipate that the local studies produced here, in St. Louis, Kansas City and the other Leagues of Missouri will each provide a different view of the issue. We urge especially new members to join this study group, as a way to learn about a key issue and see how a League study works from the ground up.

For more information or questions, please call, Mary Jo Bryan at

573-447-1159 or email her at mjbryan@cal.net. Also check LWVUS website at

www.lwv.org for study scope and timeline. There is also a link to the

featured article in the February National Voter, "U.S. Immigration: A

Historical Perspective".

Play synopsis:

On Highway 57, somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, stands a gas station. Across the blacktop is a roadside eatery called the Double Cupp Diner. The four guys at the station, Jim, Jackson, Eddie and L.M., have been known to do some auto repairs, but only when aided by quantities of time and beer. The Cupp sisters celebrate their home cooking with the same zeal they bring to being neighborly with the boys. This is their musical tribute to life by the roadside!
